Tighter New York airspace regulation:

A U.S. safety board will examine whether tighter New York airspace regulations are needed after a small plane collided with a sightseeing helicopter above the Hudson River on Aug. 8, leaving nine people dead. The National Transportation Safety Board is “going to be looking at the operations in this airspace,” Debbie Hersman, the board’s chairman, said at a news conference yesterday. “We do know it’s very congested.” The accident has placed a spotlight on a busy strip of airspace above the Hudson River in which pilots fly without air- traffic control direction and rely on their vision and a special radio frequency to avoid collisions with other aircraft. Seven bodies were pulled from the water yesterday along with most of the wreckage of the helicopter as the recovery effort continued, Hersman said. The helicopter was carrying a pilot and five Italian tourists, while the single-engine plane had on board a pilot and two passengers. “If the safety board determines that there are any issues that need to be addressed immediately because of an acute safety concern, we will issue urgent safety recommendations,” Hersman said. “It’s too early in the investigation for us to identify a cause at this point.”
