Medical Services hit in Rajasthan following doctors' stir

The government-run medical and health services in Rajasthan remained crippled as resident doctors continued the third day of their strike today.

Doctors began the strike on Sunday protesting against alleged lathi charge on medicos in Jodhpur and it quickly spread to hospitals in five districts, including in Jaipur and Ajmer, official sources said.

With health services badly hit in the affected areas, hundreds of patients and their relatives were seen running from one ward to another in search of doctors for treating those admitted in hospitals, they said.

Though there have been reports of several deaths in the last three days, officials at the State Medical and Health Directorate maintained the deaths were not connected to the strike.

Meanwhile, Health Minister A A Khan met senior officials and doctors to resolve the deadlock.

In New Delhi, Union Minister of State for Health Dinesh Trivedi described the stir as "very, very sad", while expressing concern over reports that several people had died as a result of the strike.

"Even one person should not die because of this kind of negligence and irresponsible behaviour of the doctors.

Saina slips to No. 3 in World ranking

Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal slipped one place from her career-best position of world number two to the third place in the latest international rankings release today.

The 20-year-old Saina had made a meteoric rise following her back-to-back title triumphs at the India Open Grand Prix, Singapore Open Super Series and Indonesian Open Super Series to reach the world number two spot.

But a quarterfinal finish at the recently-concluded World badminton Championship in Paris left her one place down the rung at the third position.

Saina has 64791.2637 points, while Xin Wang of China rose to the second spot after finishing second in the World Championship in women's singles. Compatriot Yihan Wang is still the number one in the ranking.

In March, Saina had attained the fifth position after becoming the first Indian woman to reach the semifinals of the prestigious All England Super Series Championships.

However, she dropped to the sixth position in the subsequent weeks.

Saina's next engagement will be the all-important Commonwealth Games in Delhi from October 3 to 14, before playing the Asian Games in November.

In the men's ranking, the Indian trio of Chetan Anand, P Kashyap and Arvind Bhatt were at 17th, 29th and 31th spot respectively, while mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V Diju were at the 13th place.

Pakistan Coach Waqar asks senior players to improve

Beleaguered coach Waqar Younis gave a dressing down to senior players of the Pakistan team and asked them to either leave cricket or step up their performances at the international level.

Well-informed sources in the national team presently touring England said that Waqar had come down really hard on his players after the team lost the first T20 international at Cardiff.

"Waqar was very angry and pointedly told some senior players that if they can't improve their fielding or performance they should leave the game," one source said.

The Pakistan team, which is facing lot of pressure after the suspension of Test captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir in the spot-fixing scandal that broke out after the Lords Test, lost the first T20 match by five wickets.

Sloppy fielding by senior players including Shoaib Akhtar and Abdul Razzaq saw Pakistan lose a grip on the match and the Pakistan coach was furious, the source said.

MS Dhoni bats for a limited Anti-corruption fight

Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has defended the anti-corruption cricket watchdog and chose to put the onus of keeping fraud out of the game onto the cricketers' personal code of ethics.

Cricketers must take more responsibility for their actions to prevent the spread of corruption, Dhoni said on Tuesday.

He was speaking in the light of the suspension last week of Pakistan players Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif following spot-fixing allegations levelled against them in Britain's News of the World newspaper.

It is crucial to keep the game clean, Dhoni told a news conference in Durban.

Personally I think it is up to the individual. You don't need someone to guide you or restrict you. If you are playing for, or representing, your country you should feel pride in doing that.

In the wake of the allegations against the Pakistan trio the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has come under fire for not doing enough to prevent the spread of corruption in cricket.
