The Current Global Economic Crisis :

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma has said that India has been less affected by the current global economic crisis due to the economy's strong fundamentals. "The current economic crisis has affected countries across continents - some more adversely, some less adversely. Without quantifying details India may be one of the countries less adversely affected because of the sound fundamentals of its economy," Sharma said yesterday while interacting with the media on completing his trip to Washington. That is the reason why, he argued, India has had (foreign direct investment) inflows, which is encouraging. "In the month of May itself we had $2 billion of FII money into India, this is because of the stability and strength of the Indian economy, which is reassuring to the Indian investor," Sharma said.At the same time, Sharma said it is also very clear that India has been adversely affected in certain sectors, mainly exports, which have dropped by 30%. This needs to be corrected, he said. "For that we need to make our exports attractive and competitive, because many of the exports which have been impacted are directly connected to the labour-intensive industry, leading to loss of jobs," he said.

sports buzz between danica patrick's to nascar.

Danica Patrick’s likely free-agency at the end of the IndyCar Series will make her a hot commodity among teams in the open-wheel series and NASCAR. Any announcement about her next move, however, will have to wait until October. The IndyCar Series season finishes Oct. 10 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and she said Tuesday on a conference call that her main focus until then will be on winning as many races as she can and finishing as high in the drivers’ point standings as possible. “To be very open about anything until that point would be foolish,” said Patrick, who is fifth in IRL points. “That’s for after the season and we’ll worry about it then.”She said she and her agents — IMG — are still gathering information about what her options will be, including talking with open-wheel teams and possibly NASCAR owners, too. An expert witness for suspended driver Jeremy Mayfield does not have the medical degrees or certifications he listed in his qualifications, NASCAR alleged Tuesday. WNBA: Perkins leads Sky Jia Perkins scored 25 points, including 11 in Chicago’s fourth-quarter comeback, as the Sky extended its winning streak to three games with a 78-75 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday. Seimone Augustusscored 14 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Minnesota Lynx to an 86-83 victory over the Sacramento Monarchs.

wii sports resort

One of the more interesting ideas creator Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned during his E3 roundtable was Woohoo Island. It’s the name he’s given to the setting of Wii Sports Resort. Those who have eagle eyes will notice that the fictional place is the same area you run in Wii Fit. Both games have the same lighthouse and windmills. I suppose this is Miyamoto’s Yoknapatawpha County. It’s the idea of a setting recurring throughout games and being as important as a character. I had a chance to spend some time in Miyamoto’s fictional island playing a few games in the upcoming Wii Sports Resort, the follow-up to Wii Sports. The sequel sports new games like basketball, swordplay and table tennis, but the big change is the Wii Motion Plus, a new peripheral that adds more fidelity to the Wii’s motion-sensing technology. It tracks one-to-one movement so that players can actually aim a bow and arrow or move a virtual skydiver and see the results perfectly translated on screen. I played two games: swordplay and basketball. Both worked well and are great party games. With swordplay, Wii Sports Resort pits you and a friend or computer in a fight with wooden swords. Swing the Wii Remote horizontally and you’ll make horizontal swing of the sword. Slash down and the movement is mimicked on screen. Surprisingly, the game even detects lunges. I played against the folks with Nintendo, and I did fairly well winning two of the three rounds by knocking my opponent off a platform. It’s almost like the sword fighting you did as a kid. I got into the habit of waggling around madly, and it seemed to work well. But I expect constantly lunging won’t get you far against a fencing expert.

Buck’s Debut by Foul-Mouthed Comic

The first edition of HBO’s “Joe Buck Live” Monday night received more publicity than it could have reasonably planned for, but for the wrong reason. Buck wanted recognition for his interview with Brett Favre about Favre’s plan to play if recent surgery restored his right arm’s former power. Instead, the show hit the top 10 of Google Trends because of the foul mouth of the comedian Artie Lange of Howard Stern’s Sirius radio show. Lange appeared in the final segment of “Buck Live,” along with the actor Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis of “Saturday Night Live.” But it became an exercise in narcissism by Lange, who capitalized on HBO’s freedom of expression to blithely demonstrate his scatological, homophobic, shock comedy. On a network that has Bill Maher hosting a weekly series, and an archive of George Carlin and Chris Rock appearances, Lange knew he could roam freely, even if he does not wield profanity with master-level sophistication. But he thinks quick and dirty and has no boundaries. He jabbered like he owned the show, knowing he was upping his nightclub fees and book sales.

No second chances for rejected sports in Olympic summer games sports program

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge cleared up the confusion (see my Monday Blog) over what will happen if the IOC members vote down one or both of the two sports that the IOC executive board recommends to join the Summer Games sports program.
Rogge said today that such a rejection in the Oct. 9 vote will not create an opportunity for one of the five other sports trying to get on the program."There cannot be a proposal for a third or fourth or fifth sport,'' Rogge said.

Advani asks Centre to ensure students in Australia

Condemning the racist attacks on Indian students in Australia, senior BJP leader L K Advani today demanded "effective steps" by the authorities of that country and asked the Centre to make "diplomatic efforts" to ensure safety and well-being of its students. "I am appalled by, and strongly condemn, a series of racist attacks in recent weeks on Indian students studying in Australia," Advani said in a press statement. About 95,000 Indian students study in Australia. The senior leader said the responsibility of ensuring the safety of Indians in Australia rests squarely with the government of that country. "BJP demands effective steps by the authorities in Australia, including quick and deterrent action against those involved in the attacks, to instil a feeling of safety among the students and immigrant Indians in the country," he said. Advani urged the UPA government to make "sustained diplomatic efforts to ensure their safety, security and well-being". Terming racism as a "blot on humanity", the BJP leader said, "It is unfortunate that this accursed relic of the past has been allowed to survive in Australia".

Dhoni then the IPL, a lucrative franchise Twenty20

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is looking forward to uniting all the talents at his disposal during the World Twenty20 in England after competing against his team-mates in the Indian Premier League. India are the defending World Twenty20 champions after winning the inaugural edition in South Africa two years ago. Since then the IPL, a lucrative franchise Twenty20 tournament that features the world's best players, has burst on the scene although this year it was played in South Africa because of security concerns. "Of course it is a pleasure representing your country after the IPL where you have limited talent in your side," Dhoni told reporters at Lord's here on Sunday. "But here we have plenty of options and we have the cream of the IPL so there is less pressure on each and every individual." India supply more IPL players than any other nation but wicket-keeper batsman Dhoni, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings, said this was not an advantage in itself. "The IPL will help us but not only us. There are quite a few players from other countries but most of our players are in the IPL. "The best thing is that our youngsters will know how to handle pressure, when in the last over you need 10 or 15 runs, everyone in our side has faced that situation."It's good exposure for our guys to play against guys like Brett Lee and Shane Warne. India have been drawn in Group A alongside Asian rivals Bangladesh - who defeated India at the 2007 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean and Ireland - who beat both Bangladesh and Pakistan in the West Indies two years ago. "In Twenty20, there is no such thing as a weak side, an individual can take the game away from you," Dhoni explained. "If we take care of the immediate steps, the result takes care of itself."

Mamata : don't blame me - 3rd train burns

Angry over Railways' decision to withdraw stoppage of several trains at Khusrupur station in Bihar, protesters torched the third train since Monday morning. Four bogies of Danapur-Rajgir passenger train were torched near Kushrupur station however, no injuries have been reported so far. Earlier the protesters had ransacked and torched the Khusrupur station, attacked the Intercity Express and uprooted rail lines under Danapur division, about 32 kilometers from Patna. The air-conditioned coach of Danapur-Darbhanga Intercity Express was set on fire at Fathua station near Patna by people who were angry with Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee who had ordered that the Shramjivi Express – a train that runs between Delhi and Patna – will now no longer halt at other stations near Patna.
