Think Big for the Nuclear Programme

Prime minister Manmohan Singh said today the country''s nuclear energy programme has allowed India to "think big" and that power from nuclear plants would reduce its over dependence on fossil fuels and combat climate change over the next decades. He also said there will be "huge opportunities for the global nuclear industry to participate" in India''s nuclear industry which is "poised for major expansion".

India sees increased power production as key to sustain its economic growth. The country currently relies on imports for about 70 per cent of its oil needs and the Planning Commission estimates that about 600 million people are not on the national grid.

Adressing an international conference on peaceful uses of atomic energy here, Singh said that 470,000 megawatts of energy could come from Indian nuclear power stations by 2050. "This will sharply reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and will be a major contribution to global efforts to combat climate change.

" The prime minister told delegates at the conference that India is looking forward to the "full and effective" implementation of the agreements it signed with the international community and their reciprocal commitments.

Vijender Singh world number One player

Olympic and World Championship bronze medallist Vijender Singh has achieved yet another first for Indian boxing by becoming the world's

top-ranked pugilist in the middle weight (75kg) category.

The 23-year-old Bhiwani boxer, who won India's maiden World Championships medal in Milan earlier this month, has 200 points and is ranked

higher than the reigning champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan.

Atoev, to whom Vijender lost in the World Championship semifinals, is third in the list with 2100 points and Olympic silver medallist Emilio Correa

Bayeux (2500) of Cuba occupies the second spot in the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) list updated after the Milan event.

"I am obviously elated at being ranked the highest in the world. It's a fantastic feeling and would motivate me to do better in future events,"

Vijender, who broke India's Olympic jinx with his bronze in the Beijing Olympics, said.

Among the other Indians, former world youth champion Thokchom Nanao Singh has slipped three places to eighth with 1400 points in the light fly

weight (48kg) category.

Nanao, a silver medallist in this year's Asian Championships in China, lost in the second round of the World Championships.

Olympian Akhil Kumar, whose World Championships campaign was cut short in the first round itself due to a wrist injury, has gone down a rung

to 10th in feather weight (57kg) category with 1050 points.

Fellow Olympian Jitender Kumar (54kg) also lost some ground because of his first-round exit in Milan as he dropped a place to 14th with 838 points.

Suranjoy Singh was 17th in the fly weight (51kg) category rankings.

World Championship quarterfinalist Dinesh Kumar held on to his sixth spot with 1550 points in the light weight (81kg) category.

Indian Job Market show

Amid uncertainty and global gloom, there is good news round the corner, as the job market in India is showing substantive signs of recovery with the current hiring level soaring to as much as 47 per cent, a study says.

"After a substantial dip in hiring levels at the start of 2009, confidence seems to be returning," global management and professional recruitment services firm Antal International said adding that the professional jobs market in India has made a substantive recovery after a major loss of confidence at the start of 2009.

"Current hiring levels (for India) are up to 47 per cent from 29 per cent in the last report," Antal International said in its report titled 'Global Snapshot'.

"The period of panic and unilluminated gloom does finally seem to be behind us. Recovery may still be a good way off, but it could be that we are now better prepared to pave the way to it than we have been for quite some time," Antal's CEO Tony Goodwin said.

In India 47 per cent of respondents said that they are currently hiring at managerial or professional level. Around 48 per cent said that they expect to hire at the managerial level in the coming quarter.

Meanwhile, 37 per cent are currently letting people go at managerial level, while, 32 per cent expect to let go people at the professional level in the coming quarter.

Antal International's Global Snapshot is a quarterly survey of hiring and firing trends in some of the world's most important employment markets. The latest survey covered HR managers in 4,217 companies, professional partnerships and financial institutions across 32 countries in April 2009.

The global picture is also showing some signs of recovery as 46 per cent respondents said they are currently hiring at managerial level, 44 per cent expect to hire over the coming quarter, while only 33 per cent are currently letting people go at managerial level and 35 per cent expect to let go people in the coming quarter.

The report further said that whilst the percentage of organisations hiring in the 32 countries surveyed has gone down, from 54 per cent to 46 per cent, it has not plummeted in the way that the economic statistics have.

Besides, the percentage of organisations expecting to hire managers or professionals in the coming quarter has actually risen, albeit by a very modest 1 per cent from 43 per cent at the beginning of the year to 44 per cent now.

The signs of recovery in the job market is remarkably visible in Asia as 46 per cent of businesses said they are currently recruiting, for Pakistan it was as much as 76 per cent, Philippines (49 per cent) and Singapore (52 per cent).

Meanwhile, in Brazil 53 per cent of those surveyed said they are currently recruiting people at the managerial level, in Canada it was 49 per cent and in USA it was 43 per cent.

Why 09/09/09 Is So Special

Why 09/09/09 Is So Special ?

Everyone from brides and grooms to movie studio execs are celebrating the upcoming calendrical anomaly in their own way.

In Florida, at least one county clerk's office is offering a one-day wedding special for $99.99. The rarity of this Sept. 9 hasn't been lost on the creators of the iPod, who have moved their traditional Tuesday release day to Wednesday to take advantage of the special date. Focus Features is releasing their new film "9," an animated tale about the apocalypse, on the 9th.

Not only does the date look good in marketing promotions, but it also represents the last set of repeating, single-digit dates that we'll see for almost a century (until January 1, 2101), or a millennium (mark your calendars for January 1, 3001), depending on how you want to count it.

Though technically there's nothing special about the symmetrical date, some concerned with the history and meaning of numbers ascribe powerful significance to 09/09/09.

For cultures in which the number nine is lucky, Sept. 9 is anticipated - while others might see the date as an ominous warning.

Math magic:

Modern numerologists - who operate outside the realm of real science - believe that mystical significance or vibrations can be assigned to each numeral one through nine, and different combinations of the digits produce tangible results in life depending on their application.

As the final numeral, the number nine holds special rank. It is associated with forgiveness, compassion and success on the positive side as well as arrogance and self-righteousness on the negative, according to numerologists.

Though usually discredited as bogus, numerologists do have a famous predecessor to loo
k to. Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician and father of the famous theorem, is also credited with popularizing numerology in ancient times.

"Pythagoras most of all seems to have honored and advanced the study concerned with numbers, having taken it away from the use of merchants and likening all things to numbers," wrote Aristoxenus, an ancient Greek historian, in the 4th century B.C.

As part of his obsession with numbers both mathematically and divine, and like many mathematicians before and since, Pythagoras noted that nine in particular had many unique properties.

Any grade-schooler could tell you, for example, that the sum of the two-digits resulting from nine multiplied by any other single-digit number will equal nine. So 9x3=27, and 2+7=9.

Multiply nine by any two, three or four-digit number and the sums of those will also break down to nine. For example: 9x62 = 558; 5+5+8=18; 1+8=9.

Sept. 9 also happens to be the 252nd day of the year (2 + 5 +2)...

Loving 9

Both China and Japan have strong feelings about the number nine. Those feelings just happen to be on opposite ends of the spectrum.

The Chinese pulled out all the stops to celebrate their lucky number eight during last year's Summer Olympics, ringing the games in at 8 p.m. on 08/08/08. What
many might not realize is that nine comes in second on their list of auspicious digits and is associated with long life, due to how similar its pronunciation is to the local word for long-lasting (eight sounds like wealth).

Historically, ancient Chinese emperors associated themselves closely with the number nine, which appeared prominently in architecture and royal dress, often in the form of nine fearsome dragons. The imperial dynasties were so convinced of the power of the number nine that the palace complex at Beijing's Forbidden City is rumored to have been built with 9,999 rooms.

Japanese emperors would have never worn a robe with nine dragons, however.

In Japanese, the word for nine is a homophone for the word for suffering, so the number is considered highly unlucky - second only to four, which sounds like death.

Many Japanese will go so far as to avoid room numbers including nine at hotels or hospitals, if the building planners haven't already eliminated them altogether.

Thirumala Thirupathi Temple

The ancient and sacred temple of Sri Venkateswara is located on the seventh peak, Venkatachala (Venkata Hill) of the Tirupati Hill, and lies on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini. It is by the Lord's presidency over Venkatachala, that He has received the appellation, Venkateswara (Lord of the Venkata Hill). He is also called the Lord of the Seven Hills.

The Temple of Sri Venkateswara has acquired unique sanctity in Indian religious lore. The Sastras, Puranas, Sthala Mahatyams and Alwar hymns unequivocally declare that, in the Kali Yuga, one can attain mukti, only by worshipping Venkata Nayaka or Sri Venkateswara.

The benefits acquired by a piligrimage to Venkatachala are mentioned in the Rig Veda and Asthadasa Puranas. In these epics, Sri Venkateswara is described as the great bestower of boons. There are several legends associated with the manifestation of the Lord at Tirumala.

The Temple has its origins in Vaishnavism, an ancient sect which advocates the principles of equality and love, and prohibits animal sacrifice.

The sanctum sanctorum which houses the awe-inspiring idol of the Lord of the Seven Hills is situated in the main temple complex of Tirumala.
