Journalists detained in a government crackdown

The suspects, including several prominent political figures, were appearing before the revolutionary court on Saturday to face allegations that they attacked security forces and destroyed property, among other charges. They were among hundreds of protesters, activists and journalists detained in a government crackdown following the unrest, which left at least 20 people dead. At the first hearing held last week, a number of defendants confessed to organising the violence and said that the opposition claims that the election was rigged were a pretext for the riots. The session was to be held on Thursday but was pushed back to Saturday after some of the lawyers of the defendants had asked for more time to study the charges against their clients. Those on trial include Mohammad Ali Abtahi, a former vice-president, Behzad Nabavi, a former industry minister and deputy speaker of parliament, and Abdollah Ramazanzadeh, a former government spokesman. Abtahi told the court that the issue of fraud was "brought up to create riots so Iran becomes like Afghanistan and Iraq and suffers damage and hardship", according to local news agencies.
