Digital sports companies set on Growth

Global sports digital media company, Perform, has acquired a majority share in Sportal Australia, a local provider of digital sports content and website management, in line with growing demand for online and mobile sports content. The combined Sportal and Perform business is set to offer a larger range of internet and mobile video content and services to their client base of sports rights holders and media distributors including Cricket Australia, Tennis Australia, Telstra, Yahoo!7, Vodafone and Sportal’s own portal sportal.com.au. The deal creates a major digital sports media player in a market set to grow as broadband and internet-enabled mobile phones mature, creating more demand for online sports content, including video services, said Alex Peebles, general manager of Perform Australia. “Perform’s global expertise in the video space will further enhance Sportal’s offering to local partners,” he added. Sportal will provide editorial content and mobile applications to Perform’s current rights holder, publisher, mobile, and media group clients, as well as represent the advertising sales for Australian traffic on Perform’s international ad network which reaches 15 million fans per month. “Perform will also be able to immediately commercialise Sportal’s content and applications throughout the world,” said Chris Mutimer, joint founder and CEO of Sportal. “Our clients will have access to exceptional video applications and content, and also to an international sales team to commercialise their video assets.” The business will be launching a new syndicated online video offer at the end of the year which will allow consumers to view on-demand video content for free as well as offering advertisers the opportunity to align themselves with leading sports brands.
