Indonesia opens first WOC in manado

Indonesia has opened the first World Ocean Conference in Manado, North Sulawesi on Monday (11/5) projected to establish the role of marine ecology in addressing the climate change. In the opening speech by Indonesia Maritime and Fisheries Affairs Minister Freddy Numberi, developing and developed nations were challenge to control the impacts of climate change by reducing carbon emission and support conservation in areas with rich biological potentials. Ministers and officials from 72 countries participated in the five-day conference where President Yudhoyono is scheduled to lead a session of the Coral Triangle Initiative on May 15th. The group comprises of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and East Timor. Australia and US to attend the session as observers. Intergovernmental meetings were scheduled from May 11th to 14th accompanied by oceans science, technology, and industry exhibition.
