European election nominations closed at today midday

Fianna Fail's Pat 'The Cope' Gallagher is expected to declare his candidacy for the European elections before nominations close at midday today. The Donegal TD is expected to run in the North West constituency, where former senator Paschal Mooney is already standing for the party.
Mr Mooney has expressed unhappiness with the idea of Mr Gallagher joining the race. Ireland's European Parliament representation is being cut from 13 to 12 this year, with Dublin losing one of its four MEPs. All of the outgoing MEPs are seeking re-election with the exception of Fine Gael's Avril Doyle and Fianna Fail's Sean O'Neachtain.
