Flight Festival - World’s Largest Model Electric flight Draws Crowds

More than 400 of the world’s most skilled model pilots and hobby enthusiasts will gather for the 8th Annual Southeast Electric Flight Festival (SEFF) – the world’s largest electric flying festival, April 30- May 3, in Andersonville, GA, near Atlanta. The four-day event, sponsored by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, broke the Guinness Book of World Records last year for the most model planes in the sky at one time. It features a premiere 1,700 ft. grass runway, wide open skies, and thousands of spectators. The action begins each day at sunrise and includes flying contests, music, food and lots of model planes including sport planes, hotliners, park flyers, 3D planes, gliders, jets and helicopters - on the ground and in the sky. A candy air drop and a kid’s make-and-take fly zone will entertain young fans while Friday and Saturday’s noon flying show will impress the entire crowd. “Flyers of every kind flock to the festival to share in the action and celebrate electric flight,” said Jeff Meyers, SEFF founder and event coordinator. “SEFF is a world-class event with 1,800 electric flying machines, cutting-edge technology and the most-skilled model pilots.” Model aviation has changed dramatically during the last several years as the quiet battery and electric-motor technology have opened new doors for model-flying enthusiasts. Every day, more electric models enter the marketplace that are smaller in size and capable of slower airspeeds more suited to confined areas. “Electric-powered model planes are the fastest growing segment in the radio aircraft hobby,” said Dave Mathewson, President of AMA, the world’s largest model aviation organization that dates back to the mid-1930s. “More model pilots are getting involved in the aviation sport with easy-to-fly and inexpensive electric models.”New to SEFF this year is the Foamy Challenge for the most unusual “flying thing” built out of foam; the Extreme Speed, a twice-daily half hour speed show with planes that fly 100 miles per hour and faster; and the SEFF Ultimate Destruction Combat, an event that judges modelers on their combat skills.
